Development studio Creative Assembly has made a name for itself with its Total War franchise, one that has offered up everything from medieval violence to fantasy-laden tropes of elves and orcs. Of the franchise, one of the most beloved titles would be Total War: Rome, released in 2004. Now, it looks like it's back on the menu from a recent Sega announcement with a title called Total War: Rome Remastered.

Sega has just announced that Total War: Rome is being remastered, with a release scheduled for April 29, 2021. The remaster offers 4K graphics, new factions (along with all previously playable), high-quality resolutions, and overhauled missions, environments, and models. Creative Assembly isn't stopping there, however: the studio has also opted to bring the classic title up to the modern age with tactical maps for battles, Merchant agents, heat maps, and a fully overhauled diplomacy system. There is a bit of frustration within the Steam forums that Creative Assembly would remaster a prior Total War: Rome instead of ensuring Total War: Rome 2 could be completed.

Others are far more excited, as the remaster is based on the Total War: Rome engine which is considered by many as superior to the current iteration of the Total War engine. Cavalry charges offered far more impact meaning the higher upkeep was worth the ability, and armies were far less likely to mass together into an amorphous blob of blood and death. Perhaps the time spent with prior iterations of the Total War franchise will rekindle the love of the franchise for Creative Assembly, and remind the studio of how it achieved its adoring fanbase.
